    Disappearing Nine Patch

    Oct 30, 2008

Here's a quick quilt block you can make with 5"squares.

    1. Sew 9 of your 5"squares together. First sew together three rows of three blocks, iron flat, and then sew the three rows together to get your nine patch. Press flat.

    2. Cut your nine patch in half vertically and horizontally. You really should measure where the exact middle is, but if your baby is going to wake up any minute and you have 11 more of these to cut.......your allowed to eyeball it.

    3. Now you have four 7" blocks.   Re-arrange them however you like. The possibilities are endless with these blocks, I made my blossoms baby quilt by sewing these together to make the quilt center. Or you can put white sashing (borders) around each block, or a set of blocks, like I'm doing with this quilt.

A nice pile of blocks waiting to be arranged.

    To make a 38" x 46" crib quilt, you’ll need to start with 99 – 5"
squares. Sew the 5" squares into 11 – 9 patches. Then after cutting the 9
patches in half each way you’ll use 42 blocks, laid out in 7 rows of 6 blocks
    each.

Just been sent this by Pinterest so have saved it although I have made lots of different disappearing the blocks, but it reminded me that I have a shoe box of 5inch squares that I cut from left over project fabrics. There is a book by a Joan Ford, called Cut the Scraps, which tells you to cut your scraps into neat set size squares (and gives you patterns to try too) and put into shoe boxes, from which I have made loads of scrap quilts. It’s a great way to use stuff up, but of course the boxes for some strange reason stay quite full!

I love this pattern! I have never seen it before. Do you know how many five inch squares are needed for a baby quilt? Do you have any photos of finished products that show the overall layout and pattern. Thank you. Love your blog.
