This one was REALLY hard for me to make myself finish once the Christmas decorations were out. I did some super simple quilting along every other tumbler, and with a soft flannel back it gives it the weight and feel of a tied quilt. I really like the feel of minimal quilting best for a "couch quilt".
I’ve had a few questions about quilting with a flannel back, but I’ve really found very little difference between quilting with flannel or a cotton back. The main difference is the quilt is a little thicker so using a walking foot is a MUST. Also I do a little extra basting or use a basting spray to make up for the extra weight and tendency of the quilt to shift around while quilting. Oh and the quilt will be cozier, warmer, and your family is more likely to use it… a major plus.
I used the 6 ½" Accuquilt tumbler die to make this quilt.

Just One More Thing
Don't ask me how I arrived at your blog --I really don't know. I LOVE it though!! You have so many great tutorials and your quilts have a quirky edge to them--just awesome. One of my 2011 goals is to make a quilt. I'm thinking of foundation piecing --I don't seem to be a consistent cutter. Do you have any advice for me?

I used to have a flannel backed quilt that my kids loved to drag around! Love those comfy, cozy, draggable quilts. This one is so bright and cheery - sure to be used & loved a lot.

I think it's beautiful and I completely agree that it's nicer for a lap blanket to have a little less quilting.... hand tied are great, soft and smooshy...

I love the patchwork binding!! So awesome!

I've made quite a few quilts with flannel backing and have never had a problem. I think part of the sucess is using only quilt shop quality flannel. Love the fabrics in your quilt!
Natalie
I wish I knew about all of these great modern fabric designers sooner. As much as I would like to recreate this quilt, many of those prints are not available.
I LOVE your color choices! the yellows, oranges, reds, blues, and browns look great together and the tumbler die cut is definitely one of my favorites. If I ever get an Accuquilt that's one of the first ones I will buy.
Patty
Really love your quilt. The scrappy binding is so perfect for this quilt. Since you backed with flannel do you still use batting?
Jess
Very nice! I need to try a flannel back soon...
