A Five + Ten Picnic Quilt

    Jul 22, 2021

    Picnic Quilt Pattern

Anyone else feel like summer is flying by?  I've finished a few projects in between camping trips and kids activities, having a project to work on has kept me sane!

First up is this quilt I made with Denyse Schmidt's new line Five + Ten and my Picnic quilt pattern.

These Five + Ten prints are bright, saturated colors, but still have a vintage summer feel.  I made this to be our actual picnic quilt, so I didn't want a white background.

Instead I used the Essex Yarn Dyed Linen in Flax, it's the perfect natural color and the white in the prints stand out against it.

Do you lay out all of your pieces into blocks before you start sewing?  Or do you just grab as you go?

Most of the time I have to organize everything into blocks before I sew.  It takes some time, but I think (?) it's faster in the end.  Maybe.

This is one of those patterns you can overthink the placement of the fabrics and blocks.  It's hard to see the pattern come together until it's sewn, and keep the same fabrics away from each other.

This time I laid the blocks out quickly, and only made sure my darkest colors were evenly spaced.  There's a few blocks I would have moved had I stared at it longer, but I also probably wouldn't have finished it.

Kaitlyn quilted this one for me, and I bound it with a dark navy blue solid...and a little strip of yellow (when the binding was too short!).  For some reason I have no photos with the backing showing, but it's a matching blue gingham.

Yes it was crazy to spend this much money on a picnic quilt that is going to get FILTHY and dragged around the yard by my girls...but now we get to enjoy using a beautiful quilt (and washing it a thousand times until it falls apart!).

Oh, I like this quilt!! The pattern is so pretty and the fabrics are perfect for it. I think the amount of money you put into it for what you are using it for is always a personal choice. No matter what you use it for it's beautiful. The quilting is fabulous too.

That's my hope - that all my gifted quilts get used so much that they're filthy and washed a thousand times! Much better than in a closet, loved but never used. Hugs to you for this happy quilt in lucious fabrics!

I absolutely love your picnic quilt! Denise's fabric is perfect. I don't always like to exactly copy quilts but you are hitting it out of the park lately! I have a question. I bought a Brightly quilt kit, it might be my last kit ever. It's listed as a layer cake or fat quarter kit & what was included was fat eighths! There are cutting instructions but it doesn't look like I'd have enough. Am I just not seeing a change of cutting circumstances cause I'm frustrated? I didn't want to start cutting & not have enough, fabric is expensive enough! Then I might not be able to use the fabric for something else. Help! I wanted to make this one so badly!

Hi Margaret! Sounds like the shop either messed up, or maybe they put in double the amount of fat eighths to make up for not having fat quarters? If you email me, I can help you figure out how to cut your fabric so you get the right number of pieces out of it. Hopefully they gave you enough fabric, the pattern recommends 13 fat quarters, so if they gave you 26 fat eighths it should be fine.

Sometimes I think its best to not only overthink Block placement, but also cost. 😉 it's a beautiful quilt, and that's what matters!

Hello. I love the Picnic Quilt pattern. I would like to make a queen size quilt. Do you offer a queen size pattern? Thank you. Pam Williams, Memphis, Tennessee.

I love this pattern. I purchased it and made the throw size, using 40 blocks. But, I only trimmed even the right side and the bottom, then used those trimmed triangles to fill in the top and left side. My resulting quilt was about 62" X 84" and I had no waste.

      Help!
I bought a Layer Cake. Can I make one of the lap quilts with it? How would I cut it?
