I have new patterns and quilts to share with you this week!
First off.....how have I even survived these last 12 years without making a chicken quilt until now??!!
Once I got this idea into my head it was stuck there for a year until I finally made these hens.
Not gonna lie...figuring out and writing this pattern challenged me big time....but watching these blocks come together made my quilting life complete.
Aren't they so cute lined up like that?!
Kaitlyn quilted this for me with a honeycomb chicken wire-ish design. I backed it with this cute 108" wideback fabric that was practically made for this quilt.
I even took this quilt down to show the real ladies for their approval...
...she gave it a good look so I'm thinking she likes it. She was more interested in the cracked corn Jane was carrying around.
The pattern includes 3 sizes, Small/Crib, Medium Throw, and Large Throw. The blocks are made with fat quarters, and yardage. The background I used is Essex Linen yarn dyed in Steel. It's my favorite slightly textured backing fabric and is easy to sew with. The last page of the pattern includes all of the cut sizes for each block in case you don't want to make a whole quilt.

I wouldn't recommend it, it's a lot of diagonal seams and small pieces.

I recently purchased and received your Chickens pattern. Let me just say, I LOVE IT! I have always wanted to make a chicken quilt, but have not, until now, found one with such detail that is NOT paper-pieced (I really dislike paper-piecing). I simply MUST make this for my grown up daughter! She has been gathering the qualifications she needs to go to University to train as an Occupational therapist.
In her maths exam, she had a question about building a chicken coop. In her biology (genetics) there was some stuff about chickens and she says it feels like chickens are following her around!
I think this would make her smile when she's snuggled up reading for her Uni course and remind her of the love and support she has.

Any tips for forming and attaching the combs? I'm having trouble with these! TIA.

Hi Tammy! They can be tricky because the fabric shifts on those tiny seams. I pin the seam to match it with the bottom (head) piece, then I sew it on. If it has shifted, I simply just trimmed off the excess fabric and you couldn't tell at all once it was done. If it's too large a gap or extra fabric, you may want to make sure the seams are sewn with scant 1/4", or more than 1/4" if your seam allowance is too big/small. Most of mine went on fine, but I did have a few that I had to trim up (I'm not a very accurate piecer!). Let me know if you need help or email me!

I would love to make a table runner for my “chicken” friends. Could the pattern be adapted to do that or do you have a pattern for that?

Hi! I don't have a pattern just for a runner, but it would be so easy to adapt the pattern! In the back of the pattern is the individual cutting instructions for each block, you could use those to make as many blocks as you want for the runner. OR (and what I would do) is follow the Small Quilt size instructions to make 9 blocks, and just make as many blocks as you want for your runner and you don't have to do any math...just make the small quilt but put it together as a runner! :)

After World War II a friend of my father's offered to set him up with hens and nesting boxes, etc. to go into business as long as he had a sign out front that said "Egger's Eggery." As soon as I saw your pattern in a catalog I said "Egger's Eggery!" and knew I had to make it in Daddy's memory. My fabric is washed and pressed, and a friend who makes Quilts of Valor is going to help me start my quilt in a couple days. I'm so excited to begin.

I love your patterns and your work. I do not understand why the PDF and printed pattern are the same price. Yes, I know, I would have the PDF immediately and avoid shipping. Yet, if purchased from a shop along with other products shipping very well can be free. I sincerely want you to be successful, which you obviously are without my 2 cents! While I would love to give you a "full share" of my purchase, I will indeed order your pattern through another venue.

Hi Darlynn! It actually has to do with wholesale/distributor pricing and not undercutting the wholesalers that I support. So even though it's great if you buy it from me...I'm also supporting the quilt shops that sell my patterns by not trying to undercut their efforts with lower pricing. They used to be priced a tiny bit lower than paper patterns, but I received negative feedback from the shops that sell my patterns....so either way I can't make everyone happy and there is no way to win. I bought this pattern on 15th June 2019 after reading your blog about it
Today l finally finished it and very happy with my quilt
l had trouble with 2 chooks using the same fabric that was not sitting the right way, so they were not quite the right size. l put it all to one side until a friend showed me how she had made a block fit into her quilt by adding a small strip at the top
Came home and did the same thing, then life got in the way and finally as we head into winter down under and with a few wet days l finally got it done
Nothing of the quality you make as l am an amateur when it comes to quilting
used the grey background as you did with this quilt
