    Diagonal Seam Tape™

    Aug 22, 2019

How to use Diagonal Seam Tape while sewing

Back in stock in my shop here!

I shared a peek at this last week, but I thought it probably deserves it's own post since it took me forever to develop!

I've been using painters tape as a guide on my machine for years...I even wrote a post about it 9 years ago here.   I usually use it for sewing diagonal seams instead of marking lines, but I also use it for making HST's.  There are lasers, or plastic seam guides you can buy and attach to your machine with adhesives, but I found them bulky and a pain to use.

How to use Diagonal Seam Tape while sewing

So I decided to make my own tape that is pretty, functional, and easy to use.

Diagonal Seam Tape™ is washi tape that is tough but thin, and easily removable.   I made a long web page devoted to it here:

How to Use Diagonal Seam Tape

It's placed in front of the feed dogs of the machine, and the red line is the stitching line, placed in front of the needle.  The black lines are just a perk, they represent a ¼" seam allowance and are helpful when making HST's, keeping strips straight while strip piecing, or even helping a beginner learn to piece.

Mostly you'll use the red line for making diagonal seams without marking a pencil line on your square, like when making a snowball block:

Or you can using it when making flying geese units:

Using Diagonal Seam Tape to make a Flying Geese block

You can use it anywhere in a pattern that tells you to "mark a diagonal line", or anywhere you need to sew a diagonal seam.   In patterns with multiple diagonal seams like Chickens, Bats, Trellis, or Shimmer...using tape is what saves me the most time!

I could go on and on...but ALL the info and more is in the web page for the tape you can read through here.

How to Use Diagonal Seam Tape to Save Time While Sewing

You can find Diagonal Seam Tape in my shop here.

I'm thrilled with how it turned out after months of thinking about it and working out the details of printing (long story short... it's a big fat pain and costly to have something so precise printed on tape!).   After using it on my own machines for a couple of months I can't imagine not having it.   I don't know if I'll re-print it again, so I hoarded enough to last me at least until I'm 90... or until I get a sewing machine with a fancy laser guide built in (all machines should have them!).

This tape looks like a great invention ! Painters tape always comes unstuck at one edge and is really hard to line up ! I have an older machine, and I bought a top rated laser guide for it and mounted it as per the instructions. It cost me almost$ 70. including shipping. It constantly moves out of alignment, making it useless ! Your tape looks like a much better option !

Thanks! I wondered about trying a laser but I'd heard they were hard to get in the right position. So for now it's tape for me!

I have always used painters tape or regular washi tape, but I love this with the lines. Great idea!

This is great! I also have a Juki and that 1/4 line is so wrong! (but I love my Juki for everything else, except the needle threader). I will be ordering some tape as soon as I think about what pattern(s) to order at the same time. This is going to sell fast...I hope you have some mailing help!!

yes, I always wonder how they can engineer such a good machine but not know what a quarter inch is! Obviously I waited too long to order. I will watch for your restock. I thought too long TWICE on Saturday! -- missed some of the new National Park small poster fabric from my favorite shop too !

Hi Brenda! Not the tape no...because shipping is $10.50 a roll! It just qualifies as a package even though it's still in a thick envelope. I'm trying to find a solution!

Oh how very very disappointing. I rushed straight to your shop to buy some and no shipping to my destination. I won't comment further, just to say it is not unusual but nonetheless disappointing.

I'm sorry Megan! Because it just barely qualifies as a package, the shipping is crazy! $10 just to Canada, and even more anywhere else. I'm trying to figure out a better way to ship them so stay tuned!

Brenda here again! I am willing to pay that $10 fee!! lol Right now, I am good at guessing and sewing with my fingers crossed, so that is why I think this tape mght be a better idea!! I have just bought another sytem for this but it has not shown up yet in the mail, and I have misplaced my original one a long time ago. Let me know when you are re-stocked and lets figure it out. I was thinking of buying 3 - one for me and the others for friends. Would that help you feel better about that $10? Or (gasp!!) would it make that s/h even more??? lol

Okay Brenda! I will post when I restock or you can email me and I will send you an email when I restock. When I restock I'm going to open it up to Canada shipping, and I think I found a more affordable option too that at least saves a few dollars! The shipping is the same whether you buy 1 or 10...which is why it's so silly to send one tiny tape in the mail for $10!

        Have a great day! -Allison

I just received your tape...what a time saver! First time I used it I goofed, but ripped it out and relooked at the instructions and the second time was the charm. So easy, if you follow the directions. I am making the Chicken blocks and it makes sewing the small diagonal pieces so simple. Thank you. I will share the news of your tape with others in my guild. Hope they will like it as much as I do.....but they will have to wait to order...I didn't, lucky me.

Can’t say enough about this tape! Sewing multitudes of snowballs, and being doubly careful, I had marked my corner squares in conjunction with using my Diagonal Seam Tape. So many times the tape was way more accurate then the marked line! No more marking for me. Every quilter NEEDS this tape.
