It may be December...but I'm still sewing with fall over here! This has been waiting to be finished and today I forced myself to get it done.
Now it's ready to be stuffed into a bin until next year...but at least it will be finished (I pulled last year's Christmas quilt out today...it still has no binding)!
To make these hourglass blocks I used my free printable pattern you can find below:
Printable Hourglass Quilt Pattern
I started with 6" squares, and I skipped trimming up my blocks since they were all semi-square (my back was thankful). Instead of sewing them together individually, I sewed each hourglass into a 4 patch, then sewed the 4 patches together to make the quilt.
Sewing looooong tiny rows together is my least favorite part of quilting, so I try to make small blocks into bigger blocks whenever I can.
I quilt it with single straight diagonal lines along the seams. Easy peasy.
With all the bulky seams, this quilt already has some stiffness and weight...more quilting would have made it even more stiff.
The backing is the navy script from Backyard Blooms (so hard to find now but I found some here, here, here), and the binding is my favorite basic Blossom.
I machine bound it with my easy machine binding tutorial.
There really is nothing better than a scrappy simple quilt. A handful of these fabrics I've had for 10+ years...so it's extra special and really nice to finally use it up!

I love this!!! My mom made me this same quilt pattern for my college graduation many years ago and it has so many fabrics from my childhood...wonderful memories and stories all captured in those fabrics! I admire that you are pulling out quilts to finish....I need to do that!
